At Green Prescription (GRx), the goal is to support people to get active, anyhow, anyway they want! It’s made clear that it is their journey, and GRx is here to support and encourage them.
So, when a client made inquiries about boot camps in the area, Sport Northland’s Healthy Lifestyle Support person, Tania Heap, did some investigating.
At the grand old age of 57 and having never done a boot camp, Tania signed up for her first 8-week boot camp. Circumspect, she was assured that there were other over 50s that also attended.
Now when we decide to do something like a boot camp one has to be real about it. So, the rules are quite clear:
Modify, modify, modify
Rest, rest, rest
Slow down! …. When necessary
Consequently, at the start, this can mean resting more than exercising.
Of the five over 50s participating, what inspired them to try a boot camp? Gretchen shares that her motivation is about “increased longevity and staying mobile.” Meanwhile Marie is gaining “more energy and getting fitter” and Julie says it’s a “great start to the day”.
Another benefit is better sleep and when asked if they felt it had improved, all answered “yes!” without hesitation. At eight weeks everyone vouched that most of their goals had been achieved and they were feeling so much better.
They still modify and rest however not as much as at the start, and warning, if you do decide to start a boot camp you could get hooked. Pictured with Tania are Marie Anderson and Gretchen Gulick.
If you are curious about boot camps and any other forms of getting active, contact GRx on 0800 ACTIVE for a chat about suitable options that work for you. Like Tania, the team try out activities themselves so they can let you know what it’s really like.
