2020 ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Code Awards Finalists Named
Despite a challenging year for sport across the country, 113 individual Finalists in 37 sporting codes have been found to contend this year’s ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Code Awards. The finalists represent 13 Northland Secondary Schools from Kaitaia to Wellsford.
Following consultation with Northland Secondary School Principals, a decision was made to change the format for this year and to not have the annual dinner. As a consequence, Code Award Winners will receive their certificate and ASB gear bag at a location close to the school they attend. School Sport Coordinators will receive the details in regard to the timing and location for these and they will communicate directly with the relevant students. While it is not intended that Finalists attend, whānau are of course, very welcome. As in previous years, Finalist certificates will be printed and provided to schools to distribute to those Finalists that are not named as Winners. With no major ceremony this year it was also decided that there would be no Team of the Year nor Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year named.
The achievements of the Finalists have been as diverse as they usually are and range from AFL to Wakeboarding. Very few codes have been completely affected by the wrath of Covid-19. Regional Sports Director, Robyn Richards was surprised by this. “I think a number of codes must have played the waiting game in regard to alert levels. By waiting, they were able to postpone and then eventually hold events that our rangitahi could compete at. This has been really positive but has contributed to the late announcement of this year’s Finalists.”
