While a lot of Northland Schools have had an opportunity to participate, play and learn about the game of Ki-o-Rahi, this year, the small rural school of Mangamuka will be entering the Mid North Tournament for the first time.
Principal Whaea Veronica Allen wants to expose her children to the fast-paced game and looked it as a way for her tamariki to get out and participate in large interschool events with an emphasis on participation rather than performance. “This was a new challenge for our kura to try and get our tamariki to this event, we have the numbers this year which helps, and a lot of our whanau are engaged with our Kura to help us get to this tournament. Our priority this year is to expose our tamariki to other events that happen outside of our area”.
The kura also has an active Teacher Aide, Matua Komene who has taken a hands-on lead with sharing his knowledge of the game and team teaching with the Principal in their sessions.
