Northern Wairoa Kids Still Rocking Body Jam

Now in its twenty third year the annual Northern Wairoa Primary Schools ASB Body Jam Competition has gone from strength to strength. Back in 1997 five teams took part to the competition meanwhile this year, the event attracted 33 teams from five local schools.

This event is driven mainly by the entrants who put in many hours of hard work to come up with original routines to wow the audience. It has become almost a culture in the local schools where the students do not need to be reminded that it is body jam time and are already using their lunchtimes during term two to prepare for the competition held during term three.

The event held at the Dargaville Town Hall on Friday 24 August, was judged in three categories – individuals, pairs/threes and teams (up to seven) for three-year levels – yr 3 & 4, yr 5 & 6 and yr 7 & 8.  Judges determined the winners who scored well across all five elements – interpretation of music, rhythm, teamwork, appearance and originality. The Judges this year were Matilda Kasek from the Dargaville branch of the ASB bank, Janine Moy and Mark Burkill from Sport Northland.

Judge Janine Moy says “it was awesome to see the smiles, excitement and nerves of all the kids that took part. They all had obviously put in a lot of effort into their routines. It was also really cool to talk to some parents there who had done Body Jam as kids, now they’re watching their own kids take part and recalling what it was like”.
