Awanui School Innovative in Approach

Awanui School have identified that there is an increasing number of packet food being brought into school in lunches. Principal Margaret Stratton is passionate about what comes into the school and together with the other staff is taking a whole school approach to changing this.

Starting in term three 2017, the school started by putting a ban on any pre-packet dairy lunch packs and then in term four they took further steps forward to empowering their students and whanau to making good decisions about what goes into their lunch box and what is left over once the kai is gone, using beeswax wraps!

The school have made beeswax re-usable lunch wraps in class working together with local businesses Mana Kai Honey who donated the wax and CBEC who facilitated the workshop. These wraps smell beautiful and have been handcrafted by each child and designed accordingly to be used as sandwich wraps for their lunch.

They have also in conjunction with their local iwi, Ngai Takoto planted their very new Mara Kai and created a worm farm for their waste in conjunction with CBEC. The kids have also crafted some beautiful re-usable shopping bags as gifts for mum and dad!!

Awanui School have done an excellent job of utilizing their community links - establishing sustainable changes and creating an environment that encourages their students and whanau to provide healthier kai and a healthier environment for their tamariki.

Check out these great videos of them in action!
