Lifestyle Challenge Improving Workplace Wellness

Active Workplace Maori Land Courts held a Lifestyle Challenge recently with some creative initiatives that has resulted in positive outcomes for the staff.

Staff said they really enjoyed having a bit of fun as a team during the challenge which has led to increased water consumption, decrease in fizzy drinks/alcohol consumption, some regular weekly walkers on the Hatea Loop and better sleep patterns.  For staff that focused on weight loss, a combined loss of 12 kilograms was achieved.

The team set up “Rules of Engagement” which included activity, nutrition, team building and aspects in mental health.  A $5 charge meant the winner took all the profits with a grocery hamper as second prize.  Each week staff had to provide a healthy initiative to share with the group whether it be a group walk, healthy recipe or shared lunch menu.  If a rule was broken by participating staff the individual incurred a $2 penalty fine! Such fines were given if staff members did not use the stairs or complete activities such as walking the Hatea Loop once a week, morning stretches, increasing their water consumption/ decreasing fizzy and alcohol consumption and not reporting back on their “Happy Place” (Individual’s “Happy Place” included a focus on good mental health with staff to take time out once a week to contemplate their week along with sharing thoughts via email). Some inventive 30 second activities are now a standard in meetings.

The manager of court services said the main focus was to promote health and wellbeing in a fun filled challenge and this worked a treat as the team are now continuing on with their next challenge to gain better workplace health for all.
