Wellbeing Comes in Many Forms

At Sport Northland, our culture deeply values wellbeing, recognising that workplace wellness and personal health are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.

Recently the Healthy Lifestyles team took this integration to the next level with a recent hui designed not only to check in on work tasks but also to focus on connection, teamwork, and recognition.

Rather than sticking to the traditional office environment, the team decided to meet at one of their own team member's homes. This shift allowed for a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere, providing a fresh environment for creative thinking and genuine connections. The meeting wasn’t just about work – it was about nurturing relationships and wellbeing.

A shared kai (meal) set the tone for the day, and the team took the opportunity to step outside and enjoy a local walk along the Whangarei Falls track. Immersing themselves in the beauty of the bush-like setting, they connected not only with nature but also with one another. The peaceful surroundings provided a much-needed break from the office routine and encouraged the team to bond in a more natural, informal setting.

As a team, we often remind participants that movement doesn't have to mean an hour at the gym. Small changes, like a 20-minute walking meeting, can make a big difference. We all felt refreshed and ready for mahi afterward.

As Natalie Wood, our Healthy Lifestyle Support person explains “If you have a 30-minute lunch break, try a 10-minute walk before eating. Those 10 minutes add up, boost your step count, and energise you for the rest of the day. You can also build on it with more short walks. Every bit counts.”

This day highlighted the significant benefits of focusing on both individual and team wellbeing. It showed how creating space for connection, whether through shared experiences, a change of environment, or simply taking time to acknowledge each other’s efforts – is essential to success, both for individuals and teams. By prioritizing wellbeing, walking the talk the Sport Northland team demonstrated that a healthy, connected workplace fosters a thriving work culture and sets the foundation for future success.
