About the Kauri Club

Since 2000, over 650 athletes and 60 different sports have been supported through the Kauri Club.  The Kauri Club recognises that Northland has a proud sporting history, and we need to do all we can to carry this great tradition on. We believe it's crucial to nurture local sporting talent, encouraging them to either stay or return to Northland so they can contribute to this amazing Northland legacy.

The Kauri Club has been dedicated to supporting this legacy by providing grants to promising young athletes. We take pride in having played a part in their journeys, no matter how small. Some of these athletes have gone on to represent Northland on the global stage, including Samantha Warriner (Triathlon), Cameron Leslie (Para-Swimming), Blair Tuke (Yachting), and many of our local Black Sticks Hockey athletes, among others.

Our goal is to continue this support, helping more of our talented young athletes achieve their sporting dreams and, one day, perhaps represent the Kauri and Cambridge Blue wherever their paths may lead. Through the Kauri Club Golf Fundraiser, we aim to help make these dreams a reality for the next generation of young Northland sportspeople.

The Kauri Club History

The Kauri Club was formed in July 2000 by Sport Northland, after a donation to the Trust by the family of the late Garry Frew, the legendary sports editor of the Northern Advocate, icon of Northland sport (inducted as a Northland Legend of Sport) and Sport Northland Patron.

The objective is to support talented young sports people (16-20 years) in Northland and give them every encouragement to advance their sporting careers and personally develop as an athlete and as a person.

Since 2000, the Kauri Club has donated over $280,000 to over 650 talented and up-and-coming young sportspeople (see the full list here). Through the generous support of Alan and Jackie Lints in partnership with the Kauri Club, we are now offering annual scholarships over a 12-month period.
