It was a beautiful day as 54 students from Otamatea High School eagerly gathered at the starting line of their annual triathlon. The students started with a 300m swim, followed by a challenging 3km bike course utilising their new mountain bikes and then finished with a 3km run.
The students were unstoppable, pushing themselves to the limit as they swam, ran and pedalled their way to the finish line. The cheers of their classmates and teachers echoed through the air as each participant crossed the finish line, exhausted but exhilarated.
In total, 14 school bikes were used for the event, each one carrying a determined student closer to victory. The excitement and energy of the day was infectious, as the students cheered each other on, encouraging their peers to push through the challenges and reach their personal goals.
As the sun began to set on the day's events, the students gathered together, exhausted but proud of their accomplishments. They spoke excitedly about the race, sharing stories of their triumphs and challenges along the way.
Senior studen, Denika Clooney (pictured below), recently transferred to Otamatea High School and loved the opportunity to compete in a triathlon at school. She was very happy with her achievement and went on to compete in another local triathlon event (Fireco Kai Iwi Lakes triathlon).
The support of the local community shows the great community network that Otamatea High School has with utilsing the Manungaturoto Country Club grounds on the day for the event to take place. The community spirit and support on the day did not go unnoticed as is a crucial part for this annual event to be able to take place.
The triathlon was a huge success with students completting all three sections on the day. The new mountain bikes provided the students with the tools they needed to take on the challenge. For the students, it was an unforgettable day of adventure, teamwork, and personal achievement.
Tina Holst, Otamatea High School Sports Coordinator, says “the triathlon event is run as part of our Inter-Iwi competition and is a great mix of fun and competitive achievement. As a rural school, we are very lucky to have the use and support of our local Country Club and community.”
Tina hopes to continue this event and is committed to improving participation each year.
