Dargaville is becoming a great place for those wanting a mountain bike experience and Deadwood bike park is no exception.
Owner, Trevor Moss, developed the park because he saw a need for somewhere to develop riders of all ages. Trevor explains “basically the objective of Deadwood is to teach people of all ages to learn to ride any type of bike in a safe environment. Once they learn these skills, they have the opportunity to advance onto the forest trails. The advantage of the oval learning track is to stay in contact with them as they go around. Going over the long jump is always a goal…it’s very forgiving”.
The park is graded 2-3 and is mainly single track down hill and an easy uphill ride. Mountain biking encourages riders to gain core strength, bike handling skills, balance and can be achieved by many ages depending on the technicality of the trail. Deadwood can be ridden with most types of mountain bikes including ebikes.
The privately owned Mountain Bike Park is located a convenient 15-minute bike ride from Dargaville and is only stone’s throw from the new Kaihu Valley Trail. The 15-acre property has a 1.5km down hill run and a 500m climb back to the top of the trail. There is also a beginners track and learners jump for newbies.
When you arrive there, you are greeted by a repurposed caravan “Deadwood bikers bar” that looks like a Western Saloon, a great place to hang out after your ride for a BBQ.
Trevor offers the park free to the public by arrangement. He is happy for people to message him and work out a time that suits both parties. As well as local riders, he often has groups from outside of the area coming and enjoying the park. There is a Facebook page “Dargaville Bike Park-Deadwood” so check it out.
