Tai Chi Changing Lives One Flow at a Time

**The location of the class mentioned in the article has changed. Updated information can be found at the end of the article**

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art that can be practiced both traditionally as well as modified for modern practice while still maintaining the benefits for health.

Tai Chi health training concentrates on relieving stress on the body and mind while also improving balance, muscle strength, body awareness, mindfulness and reducing the risk of falls.

Jill, has been teaching Tai Chi for over 17 years, runs a class twice per week from Cornerstone in the heart of Kerikeri CBD. The location of the classes at Cornerstone provides a clean bright space with the large wall of windows allowing the outlook of the natural environment inside providing the perfect space to breathe and take time for yourself – it’s like a getaway from the outside world.

Jill encourages participants to do breathing exercises which helps with anxiety along with encouraging home practice and affirms it doesn’t matter if it is not perfect. Checking on participants regularly throughout the class ensures participants are safe and getting the most out of each session - the beginner class is an excellent way to dip your foot into the realm that is Tai Chi.

Throughout the session all planes of movement are used with connection and a focus on using breath and focus which provides a slow burn through the flows (which is really helpful for arthritis and rehabilitation). The benefits can be seen with improving participants' balance due to taking backwards steps in tai chi and learning the use of weight transference.

Don’t just take our word for it, hear what class participants say:

“I’ve been coming for 5 years. It’s part of my selfcare plan, helps with mindfulness, inner peace, enjoy connecting with others.”

“I have been coming for 2 years helps with strength and balance, moving, raise awareness of mind and body”

“I get a good night’s sleep after a class, it’s great to come after work as it helps me distress, I find it helps calm my mind, slows me down and helps me cope with a hectic life/world”
