NorthTec’s Comprehensive Wellness Plan

NorthTec, a well-known tertiary provider in Northland delivering a large range of programmes for students, is also providing a great workplace wellness programme for their staff.

The programme aligns to Te Whare Tapa Whā – a holistic Māori health model encompassing Te Taha Wairua - spiritual wellbeing, Te Taha Hinengaro - emotional and psychological wellbeing, Te Taha Tinana - physical wellbeing and Te Taha Whānau - whānau and social wellbeing.

For NorthTec, Te Whare Tapa Whā recognises that social, cultural, economic and spiritual factors can impact on the needs of individuals and that all of these are considerations for overall wellbeing.

Each month, wellness initiatives are put forward with a specific focus around wellbeing. Examples include walking groups, walking maps and staff gym promotions. Wellbeing is highlighted in monthly health promotions such as sit less move more - promoting more movement throughout the day, mental health awareness and SunSmart.

People Operations Adviser Krystal Riley is always looking at different ways to engage the team, such as a 5km activity challenge underway currently.  Staff can join up for the fun challenge in a closed Facebook group, sharing their photos and comments, supporting each other to keep on track, and be in to win prizes.  On the first day, 18 staff signed up!

Moving forward, the team will continue with easy wellbeing initiatives for staff, with Te Whare Tapa Whā in mind. These include promotion of EAP counselling services, library resources, onsite gym and also making mindfulness and gratitude training available.
