Dorothy is feeling like a million dollars because at 81 years young, she is going to Hydrotherapy Classes at the Whangarei Aquatic Centre twice a week (she now rocks a new bathing suit) and to a Sit Fit Class once a week and loving the benefits that this brings.
Hydrotherapy is a therapeutic whole-body treatment that involves moving and exercising in water. Hydrotherapy pools are different from ordinary pools - the temperature is controlled with the water set at a steady temperature of 33-35 degrees celsius.
Benefits of a hydrotherapy class include pain relief, relaxation and freer movement of stiff or damaged joints, better blood flow and muscle strengthening - thus improving balance and coordination.
Sit fit classes are chair-based exercise workouts for the less mobile, allowing for progression at each person’s own pace to perform balance and stand activities.
Even though Dorothy has a very busy life, her goal has been to get herself into a weekly activity routine, to ensure she gets the benefits from attending these classes.
Dorothy realised after becoming very ill that she needed to make herself a priority. She needed to take responsibility for her own wellbeing. She admits that yes, she is suffering from the symptoms of old age, however she has a strong spirit. She shares her philosophy - “I want to die healthy. I want to make the most of every year that I have left, by looking after myself, making them all worthwhile”.
Dorothy is very excited because she feels better overall, is more confident and she can move more freely. Working out with other people has provided her with inspiration, social connection, encouragement and support.
At Green Prescription we advocate for a holistic approach to health. It is an inspiration to be among wonderful people like Dorothy and we thank her for sharing her health journey.
