Northland Sports Awards Finalists Named

The 2018 Conbrio Northland Sports Awards finalists have been named. Thirty two sports codes nominated 146 people with 126 finalists selected to be in the running to receive the top honors in their respective categories.

The Conbrio Northland Sports Awards has been an annual event organised by Sport Northland since 1987. The evening is to celebrate key achievements of Northland sportspeople from players, coaches, officials, to those that have dedicated years of service to sport and are having a positive impact within our communities.

The awards acknowledge achievements between 1 October 2017 and 30 October 2018 whereby Northland’s Regional Sports Organisations or National Sports Organisations were asked to nominate their Northland top male, female and junior athletes, coaches, officials and sport leaders along with those who have given outstanding long service to their sport. The winners from each respective sports code are then eligible for the major awards being the Fireco Northland Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year and the Conbrio Supreme Award.

Anna Markwick, Sport Northland’s Community Sport Manager says “we are really pleased with the quality of the nominations again this year with a number of Northlanders having outstanding performances on the national and international stage, who will be in line to take out the Supreme Award”.

The PAK’nSAVE Coach of the Year Award received some excellent nominations, making it one of the most difficult awards to decide for the judging panel this year.

The other award that is always hotly contested is the Garry Frew Memorial Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award, which also includes a grant from Sport Northland’s Kauri Club. 26 of the nominees were under the age of 21 which makes them eligible for the Junior Sportsperson Award, of which eight have been named as finalists.

The Northern Advocate People’s Choice Award will also be awarded on the night where the public will be able to vote for their favourite ‘Good Sorts’ in the lead up to the event.  “We are asking the public to put forward their nominations of someone who they think, has done something good for sport within the Northland region that deserves the recognition”. Finalists will be profiled in The Northern Advocate in the lead up whereby the public can vote.

The Conbrio Northland Sports Awards will be held on Friday 15 March 2019 at the ASB Stadium, Whangarei.

Full details on the awards evening and how to purchase tickets can be found on www.northlandsportsawards.com or by contacting Sport Northland (09) 437 9600.
