Play It Again Sports Equipment

Watch out for the yellow tubs in Dargaville. As part of the new Sportsville Hub, locals are encouraged to donate sporting equipment and leaving it in the tubs which are located around the town so it can be recycled and used at the new sports hub.

Young people outgrow sports equipment so fast it's amazing and families are always changing sports or trying new activities. This can leave one with a lot of quality sports equipment that is still in great condition and has lots of years left in it - so why not donate it?

The idea came from the already popular pātaka kai stands that are popping up all over New Zealand, only with a twist to make it a “Play it Again” sporting equipment stand. The tubs for the equipment were donated by a local farmer and the Dargaville Menz shed cut them into tubs and fitted handles. Perfect for all weather and useful to carry onto the courts or fields. These will be re-sited at the new Sportsville facility so that it can be an ongoing practice to reuse sporting goods such as shoes, rackets, bats, balls etc.

This, we hope will encourage more play in the park and follows the Sport New Zealand Play principles which are:

  1. Play is important to the wellbeing of young New Zealanders
  2. Play is the cornerstone of our Physical Literacy Approach
  3. Play is the shared responsibility of everyone
  4. Young people must have access to enriched and varied playful experiences within their environments
  5. Adult must understand what their role is in enabling play
  6. Young people need the opportunity to experience risk and challenge through play
  7. Wherever possible, play should include the opportunity to be active

One of the Sportsville Board members Bronwyn Williamson says “I think it is a great idea. We want the Sportsville Hub to be used by the community and by having this sport equipment available that means there is always something for the kids to play with”.
