Making Community Connections

For the first time ever in the Northland region, Te Ra Whitu Rangatahi o Te Tai Tokerau – Seventh Day Adventist Youth Northland came together to congregate in Kaikohe.

The mission of the church is to bring youth together to bond and make memorable connections while serving others in their communities and they did this with hosting a free breakfast for the residents of Kaikohe.

Between 70-80 youth members from North Harbour, Whangarei, Dargaville, Kaitaia and Te Kao all gathered at the Kaikohe Seventh Day Adventist Church and undertook activities like a letterbox drop off inviting the community to their breakfast through to hosting the breakfast.

Residents were also encouraged to bring along a canned or dry food item to contribute towards the ADRA food bank which helps to feed those in need in the community.  Many local families came along and enjoyed their breakfast with the youth.

As a result of the gathering, the youth are looking at congregating at least three times a year in Kaikohe to host youth and family-friendly events.  Lee Mason from SDA says “we are looking forward to watching our youth grow in these environments and in becoming our future leaders.”

If there are any groups or residents that want to get involved with this positive kaupapa and organise any sport and recreational activities please contact Sport Northland’s Community Connector Cheryl Smith on 0274 343 417 or email cheryls@sportnorth.co.nz.  Any assistance will help strengthen the community.
