Every Wednesday at exactly 9:00 am, a small group began to gather behind the old Star Hotel. At first, it was only a few people who came together and thought they could add some movement into their weeks by going on a walk each Wednesday. This was started by the awesome health coach Hallie and her crew at the commercial street surgery.
They didn’t call themselves anything official back then. It was just “the Wednesday walk.”
The idea had been simple: get moving, breathe some fresh air, and maybe feel a little less alone. No pressure, no expectations—just an hour along the cycle track that wound past trees, fences, and the occasional curious cow.
The first few weeks were quiet. They walked at their own pace, sometimes together, sometimes apart, chatting when it felt natural, enjoying the silence when it didn’t. But something gentle and good began to grow.
A few weeks later the group had grown.
Word spread the way good things often do—slowly, then all at once. A mixture of patients from local medical centres, green prescription participants and anyone else who wanted to join... “Wednesday Walking Group – 9:00 a.m., behind the Star Hotel. All welcome.” Someone added: “Coffee after at the Railway Café”
And that’s when it truly became something special.
People came for all sorts of reasons. Some wanted to get fitter. Some needed a reason to leave the house. Some brought their kids, full of energy and laughter. There were fast walkers and slow walkers, deep thinkers and easy talkers. No one was left behind—because someone always chose to walk beside them.
Each week followed the same comforting rhythm. Meet, greet, walk, and then gather at the Railway Café afterward—flushed cheeks, warm drinks, and the easy hum of conversation. Coffee for some, water for others, even those that couldnt make the walk for whatever reason would turn up for their weekly coffee and catch up.
They all laughed, but there was something deeper in it too—a shared understanding that this simple weekly habit had become more than exercise. It was connection. It was community. It was a reason to show up. And every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. behind the Star Hotel, they still gathered — fast or slow, young or old.
Keen to be part of it? Come along and join the group—everyone’s welcome. Because sometimes, the smallest steps taken together can lead to something truly wonderful. Just come along on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. behind the Star Hotel—the more the merrier.
