The Northland sun met its match in March as Kaikohe Christian School made waves by hosting its inaugural school-wide Swimming Sports Carnival. What started as a simple observation during a routine school swimming session evolved into a landmark event that united the community and redefined participation in the pool.
From Sticky Note to Starting Block
The journey to this milestone began with a spark of inspiration during a standard school swim session. Recognising the untapped potential and enthusiasm of the students, the idea for a formal sports day was born.
The "paper trail" of success started humbly:
To ensure the day was professional and well-equipped, the school reached out to Northland College for resources and sought the mentorship of local legend Anne Stillwell. As a veteran swimming teacher and ambassador with years of experience coordinating interschool events in Kaikohe, Anne’s guidance on race flow, deck setup, and technical equipment (like professional lane and false-start ropes) proved invaluable.
Every Lap Counts: A Model of Inclusivity
The event catered to all ages, from year 1 through year 13, balancing competitive fire with pure participation. The programme featured:

A standout feature was the Participation Token System. While 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers were celebrated, every student who entered the water earned a house-coloured token. This effectively removed the "fear of losing," leading to record-breaking engagement levels that left teaching staff highly impressed, especially by students who typically shy away from aquatic sports.

A "Village" Atmosphere
The stands were packed with parents and whānau, particularly from the Junior and Middle syndicates, creating a vibrant, supportive environment. Following the event, the school maintained its commitment to growth by sending out surveys to teachers and the wider community via the school page to gather feedback on what made the day special and how to improve for 2027.
"Overall, we are extremely proud of the day. It wasn't just about the fastest swimmers; it was about building a culture of water confidence and school spirit that we can grow year after year." — Event Organizer.
Future-Proofing the Pool
To ensure this wasn't a one-hit-wonder, a Swimming Sports Committee has been established, and a comprehensive "Swimming Sports Manual" has been added to the school's shared drive. This ensures that the contacts, procedures, and "vibe" created this year will serve Kaikohe students for decades to come.
