Healing Through Health: Arlia’s Path to Physical and Emotional Strength

A local Whangārei woman is proving that even in the toughest of times, small steps toward self-care can make a world of difference. Amid the emotional challenges of divorce and raising young children, “Arlia” (name changed for privacy) found renewed purpose through our Green Prescription programme, which promotes health through physical activity and nutrition.

Referred by her Health Nurse while coping with grief and major life changes, Arlia turned to Green Prescription with a goal: to find something just for her—something that fills her cup. After a five-year break from the gym while having her babies, she’s now back to training five days a week, setting her sights on losing 5kg and embracing the variety of classes offered at her local Kensington Fitness Centre.

“I love being active—it’s been ingrained since I was young,” she shared. “The health benefits have helped me become more organised, emotionally stronger, and able to care for my whānau.”

“I haven’t lost any weight, but more importantly, I’ve gained muscle, mental and emotional stability, and clarity of thought. I’m now focused on myself, offering more stability and confidence to my kids—that everything is and will be... just fine. I’m stronger in mind and body. The mental strength I’ve gained from going to the gym helps me stay focused on myself and learn to bring my attention back when I get distracted.”

Along the way, she’s formed new friendships, received a job offer, and built a sense of resilience—particularly in conquering cold winter mornings since April, as Arlia heads to the gym early each day.

“If I go to the gym, it’s going to be a good day,” she says, adding, “I feel sluggish if I don’t.”

Green Prescription, she added, “gave me the best start I could have asked for.” With the support of her Healthy Lifestyle Support and gym trainers, she’s discovered empowerment in both body and spirit—proof that when life feels heavy, movement can help lighten the load.

“It feels good to know that others care and are invested in your journey and helping you succeed.”
