Regent New World is a local business that supports the local community with employing around 200 staff. Amongst the staff, are qualified butchers and bakers making up a strong base of employees led by local owners Todd and Lillian Leathem.
With wellness in mind and to continue providing opportunities for their staff, Regent New World joined Sport Northland’s Active Workplace programme 12 months ago. Over this period, the team engaged in monthly wellness initiatives led by owner Lillian Leathem.
To begin their journey, staff were surveyed to assess their wants and needs to improve workplace wellness and from there, a timeline was developed packed full of workplace wellness initiatives. These included Biggest Loser competitions, in house walking groups, participation in summer sports, healthy fruit promotions, healthy food initiatives, nutritional seminars, stop smoking campaigns, health and wellbeing weeks and supporting community fundraisers such as “The Crank” Canteen fundraiser. “The Crank” challenge is a 12 hour RPM bike session. Staff completed this challenge over a continuous period of 12 hours raising money for Canteen combining fun, fitness and giving to a great cause.
Regent New World have also been a strong contingent in the Sport Northland Run/Walk Series with staff moving from their in house walking group to participating in varying run/walks throughout Northland. The team also completed the inaugural Ray White Hatea loop Challenge (a workplace run/walk around the local Hatea Loop in Whangarei) in December 2015 with staff enjoying a pre - Christmas celebration through activity in a fun festive night.
“At Regent New World, workplace wellness is an important part of our business” says owner Lillian Leathem. “We are in the people business and without our team we don’t have a business”. Active Workplace Coordinator, Sharon Adams “commends owners Todd and Lillian on their commitment and great results they have attained as a result of being involved in the Active Workplace Programme and wish them continued success in implementing wellness initiatives”.
