At Whangaroa Health, staff wellbeing and Hauora are being embraced with a wide range of initiatives that reflect a whole-person approach to health. Through regular updates in the “What’s Coming Up in Wellbeing” communications, staff are kept informed and engaged in opportunities to support their physical, mental, and emotional health.
A key support available is access to in-house physiotherapy through the community physio service—making movement and recovery more accessible for not just the community but staff. Complementing this, ergonomic reminders are being shared regularly, including tips on standing desk use and stretching options.
Recognition and appreciation are celebrated through the monthly pānui, with shout-outs and the much-loved fist pump highlighting staff contributions. While this is already a valued part of workplace culture, there are plans to grow and diversify recognition opportunities over time.
Physical wellbeing is also well-supported as Whangaroa Health staff embraced the chance to connect and get active by taking part in the IronMahue Duathlon earlier this year. Ironmahue, a duathlon set up nine years ago is a grassroots event designed to promote health and wellbeing for the community of Mahinepua and the hapu of Ngāti Ruamahue.
What began as an idea to do something fun as a team quickly turned into a strong show of participation, with 22 staff members signing up—including the interim CEO, managers, and frontline staff. A dedicated WhatsApp group was set up to help coordinate training sessions and keep motivation high. Regular walking options (4km and 5km) where set up and supported with one staff member, a trained ocean swimmer, offering swim training throughout the week. Photos and updates shared in the group helped build camaraderie and connection across departments.
The event not only promoted physical wellbeing but also strengthened relationships within the team. It was a fantastic example of Hauora in action—bringing people together through movement, encouragement, and shared goals.
When it comes to nutrition, Whangaroa Health offers a robust mix of resources, including support from an onsite dietician, access to the in-house garden, and Healthy Food Guide recipes online. Some onsite meals can be available to staff, making healthy eating a more convenient option during busy workdays.
Wellbeing also includes giving back, and the team has taken part in campaigns such as Pink Ribbon Day and Blue September, reinforcing their community spirit. Rounding out the wellness offerings is access to onsite massage therapy, offering a chance to recharge both body and mind.
With this multi-layered approach, Whangaroa Health is not only supporting staff wellbeing but embedding a culture of care, respect, and holistic health across the organisation.
