Put quite simply, Green Prescription is first and foremost a support service, we are here to support you in making a positive change towards your health and wellness, most of the time supporting you to put the knowledge that you probably already know into place in a supportive environment.
This can be said of father of four, George Tatana from Kaitaia:
George, a dedicated single father of four, found himself struggling to keep his tamariki active and engaged in a world filled with digital distractions. Though he was very active himself, he needed some guidance on how to get his tamariki moving and more connected with each other and their surroundings.
One day, George reached out to his GP, seeking some awhi from Green Prescription around Hauora (wellbeing) steps for both himself and his tamariki. After being referred and organising an appointment with his healthy lifestyle support person – Corrin from Sport Northland.
They discussed the concept of "30 minutes a day, press play," was discussed - a simple yet powerful idea to ensure daily activity. Also discussing the idea around play rather than the kupu exercise and opening space into kōrero around some fun things we both used to like to do and play when we were younger and then incorporating those ideas into a whānau activity, they could do that also promoted the parameters of Te Whare Tapa Wha and connection to Te Ao Māori.
A month later, during a check-in, George shared his progress. He had embraced the healthy recipes, and the tamariki were also enjoying helping dad to prep the kai together. Their whānau also started a maara at their papakāinga, enjoying the fruits and vegetables they grew together. The "30 minutes a day, press play" principle had also become a daily habit, and George had noticed significant changes in his tamariki. Loop walks around their neighbourhood also became cherished moments of connection and conversation.
George's journey wasn't just about his Tamariki. He too embarked on a holistic path, feeling happier and more fulfilled. The changes in their lifestyle brought about more whanaungatanga and connection within the whanau unit and brought about a sense of mauri ora—life force, living well—that resonated throughout their daily lives.
George's story is a testament to the power of small, consistent changes and the support of a caring community. His dedication to his children's well-being and his own holistic journey exemplifies the essence of whānau and the joy of living a healthy, active life together for many years to come.
