In the heart of Northland where rolling hills meet the rugged coastline, a gentleman became synonymous with rugby greatness. When you think of Northland, no name stands out more than the legend from Kawakawa, Sidney Milton Going, better known to many as "Super Sid." His story is one of athletic prowess, deep community involvement and a legacy that inspired generations.
Sid was a true, Blue Northlander and as such was part of the first intake to be inducted into the Northland Legends of Sport, established in 2008 and administered by Sport Northland. Among the current 37 inductees, Super Sid was the first inductee and is arguably one of Northland's finest. He created excitement and simply changed the game. His exceptional skills on the rugby field and his commitment to his family, club and community earned him a revered hero status in Northland and in New Zealand's rugby folklore. His deeds on the playing field and the way he conducted himself off it have been extremely powerful, putting regions like Northland on the map. Let's also not forget Sid's dedication to his faith, not allowing anything to stand in the way of his devout and steadfast beliefs.
Among all his achievements, accolades, headlines, and stories as an iconic Northland representative (#364) and respected All Black (#655) and Māori All Black, that featured in the local Northern Advocate during his era, it was Sid's humility and unassuming nature that most stood out.
Despite his superhuman attributes, he enjoyed spending time on his tractor at his farm which made him real and approachable. “I was personally fortunate to have been able to meet Sid in 2003 at a Northland sports awards event which was extremely special, as he had an undeniable aura about him, always freely giving of his time and opinions” says Yovich. Even just four months ago he was finding ways to give back through gifting signed items to charity events. These items are always the most sought after, showcasing his enduring status.
With the challenges of keeping children engaged in sports and providing role models who inspire the next generation, especially in small towns and regions, Northland owes a great deal to leaders like Sidney Going who inspired many. The next time you travel through the Northland region and overlook Maromaku, you'll see a sign honouring Sidney Milton Going on the hills. Take a moment to remember the legend, Super Sid - a true Northland Legend of Sport!

One of the greatest…An absolute pleasure to be coached by him in my early days. RIP Super Sid. – Mark Robinson (Northlander and former All Black half back #965)
Northlands greatest ever All Black, one of NZ’s greatest as well. Such a match winner. Prolific try scorer, especially in the big games, superb tackler, never afraid to take on the opposition’s forwards. A true inspiration to so many New Zealanders and especially those in the North. A great role model gave a lot back to the game, a true gentleman. – Craig Presland (Former North Auckland Representative #551)
