Sporting Success in the Far North recognised


A large gathering of people celebrated sporting success in the Far North on Friday evening at the Far North District Council Far North Sports Awards held at Reia Taipa Resort. Organised by Sport Northland a total of 45 awards were made over the evening culminating in the Far North District Council Supreme Award for the highest sporting achiever in the Far North over the previous year. Youth were well represented with 8 ASB youth achiever awards while 24 ASB code awards were made in the 18 sports codes represented. An additional 10 special or volunteer awards were made.

The Top Energy Sportsman of the Year went to Blair Tuke in the sport of Sailing

Earlier in the week Blair and his New Zealand Sailing team partner, Peter Burling won the South American 49er Champs in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  This was their 21st consecutive win since the London Olympics in 2012. Most recently however both were awarded World Sailor of the Year at the International Yachting Federation World Awards in China.

The Top Energy Sports Woman of the Year went to Rose King in the sport of Waka Ama

Rose is a member of the Nga Hoe Horo Waka Ama Club. She was 1st Solo Open Woman at the Bo Herbert Memorial Race over 30km. She is also Waka Ama NZ’s 2015 W1 Open Women’s rudderless champion

The Far North District Council Supreme Award went to Blair Tuke for his world class achievements in Sailing

Guest speaker was Kiri Wills who was originally from Kaitaia. Kiri is now the Netball NZ Development Coach and is involved in NZ U21 level and NZ A level coaching .She is also Coach of the development academy

Additional to the recognition of achievement were presentations made to Shackleton Unichem Pharmacy and Riders Sports Depot in recognition of their long term support of Sport in the Far North.
