Whangarei Boys High School’s top swimmer Callum Prime and Kerikeri High School’s rising hockey star Samantha Polovnikoff took out the top honours at the 24th annual ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sports Awards held at the ASB Stadium last night.
ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sportsman of the Year Callum Prime has had a very successful year in the pool and currently holds 22 Northland Swimming records. Selected into the New Zealand Age Group Swimming team, Callum competed in Australia and successfully beat some of their best swimmers.
Samantha Polovnikoff, named ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sportswoman of the Year, has this year made great gains in her favoured sport of hockey. She played for the Future Black Sticks team against Australia and Japan and was given dispensation from a Hockey NZ training camp to be able to attend the awards.
ASB Sporting Excellence Awards for high performance in a sport not offered at secondary school level went to crossfit champions Ioane Job (Whangarei Boys High School) and Kyla Smith (Kaitaia College). Job and Smith were the winner and runner up, respectively, in a Teen Gauntlet international competition.
Thermatech All Rounders of the Year for 2015 were Mackenzie Johnson from Whangarei Girls High School and James Mortimer from Huanui College while the NorthTec Area School Awards went to Taimana Ngakuru-Smith from Tauraroa Area School and Sullivan Tito from Mangakahia Area School.
The Kerikeri High School Sailing team was named the Jeff Oliver Print Team of the Year following their inter-dominion win against Australia where not only did NZ win the regatta, Kerikeri finished as the top team.
During the evening a total of 70 Northland Secondary School students were announced as sport code winners in sports that covered both team and individual competition. Sport Northland’s Regional Sports Director Robyn Richards said “School sport is really important and is often where you make your best school memories. The achievements acknowledged at these Awards are only the tip of the iceberg in regard to what our secondary students are capable of”.
As a follow up to the awards, ASB is inviting this year’s winners to a ‘performance pathway’ experience early in December. This will include the presentation of a Leadership session by Blair Tuke and two other Emirates Team New Zealand members. One of Northland’s own top athletes, Ady McKenzie, will head a number of sessions. They will include High Performance Athlete Life, nutrition and practical demonstrations and testing. ASB will also provide the attendees with financial literacy advice.
