Kaikohe Districts & Sportsville hosted a community hui to present the designs of the new multi- sports complex at Lindvart Park. Local organisation, ĀKAU presented the plans to a receptive audience.
Sport Northland Community Connector Cheryl Smith says “it was great to see the room full of community people, young and mature. They were very impressed with what they saw.”
ĀKAU held a workshop earlier in the year with some of the local tamariki to develop concepts for the project. Tamariki developed concepts that incorporated Papahawaiki, an awa that once flowed in the area, ideas for play spaces and concepts for structures within the park.
It was important to tamariki “they wanted more than a square box” explains Ana Heremaia from ĀKAU. Drawing on the kōrero of Kaumatua Hirini Tau that Lindvart Park was a place where Hongi Hika’s war parties would assemble and train has also been incorporated into the design.
The tender has now gone out for the building of the complex with hopes of construction starting by early 2022.
Below are the plans for the new multi-sport complex at Lindvart Park. It will have two courts, a gym space, offices, a meeting room and changing rooms.
“We are looking forward to having such a great new facility” concludes Smith.
