Urban Haka Dance Competition is a new and exciting competition created by He Oranga Poutama Kaiwhakahaere Horrace Maunsell, in which primary and intermediate schools from all over Northland are invited to showcase their skills and participate in Northlands newest dance competition.
This event offers a new platform for tamariki to present their creative ideas and inspiration for dance, to express them through movement. The purpose of this competition is to give tamariki the opportunity to create their own routine using the urban styles of hip hop and incorporating Māori performing arts into their routine, and above all have fun and participate.
The Urban Haka Dance Competition is all about bringing together two styles of movement - Hip Hop and Māori Performing Arts. As part of the competition, teams are to come up with a two to three minute routine to showcase on stage in front whanau, friends and a panel of judges.
There are two sections involving juniors (year 4 - 6 students) and seniors (year 7 and 8 students) and two different events to reach out to as many students as possible.
