Disc Golf (also known as Frisbee Golf) is played like traditional golf but instead of using clubs and balls you use a flying disc (Frisbee) and a basket.
HOW DO YOU PLAY?
Find yourself a disc (an ordinary frisbee will do) and make your way to one of the Disc Golf Courses in Northland. Click here to find a course near you.
Starting at tee #1 (white pole with the #1 on it), try to sink your disc into the basket. All courses have been designed so that you stay on the left hand side of the park as you make your way up the course, returning on the other side of the park as you complete the course.
You can keep track of the number of throws it takes you to sink your disc (Par) on your score card.
The rules are very simple:
- Throw your disc from the tee off pole
- Pick up your disc from where it landed and throw it from that same spot
- Take turns throwing your disc if you are playing with other people to avoid hitting anyone with your disc
- Be cautious of other park users and keep the park clean
- HAVE FUN
*WARNING – THIS ACTIVITY IS VERY CONTAGIOUS
TIPS ON THROWING A DISC:
1. Hold the disc firmly and flat with your right or left hand.
2. You can start with a short run up to the tee off. Keep your arm and body loose and step into the direction of the target.
3. Turn your shoulder away from the basket so your back is facing the target. This rotation will give you leverage with your throw.
4. Reach back and keep your arm low and in line with your stomach/chest. This reach back will increase your power on the throw.
5. Plant your foot, the same foot as your throwing arm and keeping the disc close to your stomach/chest will control the direction of the throw.
6. Release the disc at the same height and direction of your target and follow through with the momentum of your arms.
Putting Tip:
Lob your disc into the basket when putting and if you miss, the disc will land flat on the ground somewhere very close to the basket making the next shot easy to achieve.
DIFFERENCES IN DISCS:
Generic discs and disc golf discs are quite different from one another. Playing Disc Golf can be done with any type of disc, however the result of your game will vary depending on your equipment. Disc Golf discs are harder to throw but will be more accurate when thrown properly.
