Demand for Bikes in Schools in Northland

Schools in Northland have caught wind of the successful Bikes in Schools initiative that originally started in Hastings.  Bikes in Schools is a unique concept that aims to provide all pupils at primary schools regular access to a bike, bike helmet and specially designed bike tracks, within the school environment. The aim of the initiative is to encourage primary school pupils to become more active and healthy, help them develop various bike skills and build their self-esteem and confidence while in a safe and familiar environment.

Bike Northland has approached several schools in Whangarei that are situated near the current and future development of the off-road cycle network that the Whangarei District Council is developing from the Whangarei Walking and Cycling Strategy.  All of the schools approached are very keen to see the initiative go ahead in their school and other schools around Northland who have heard of the initiative are also very keen.

Bike Northland is working hard on trying to source funding to help see the Bikes in Schools initiative kick start in Northland.

For more information on the Bikes in Schools initiative contact Stu Bell, Bike Northland, phone (09) 437 9633 or email stu.bell@xtra.co.nz
