"Smoking" - Not Paul's Future

‘Smoking, Not Paul’s Future – Making Change for Whanau’

Paul was referred to the Green Prescription (GRx) programme in November 2011, as he wanted to become healthier and give up smoking. Paul’s main motivation for wanting to make change were his nieces and nephews. One day he had an epiphany and sat watching his young nieces going down the track of smoking and drinking that he had fallen into. He did not want this for them and wanted to show them that there is another way to live. With that, Paul came to meet with his GRx Coordinator, Renee Wikaire. Paul shared his story with Renee and they started to plan how Paul could make some changes.

The initial changes made were small, given Paul had just given up smoking it was paramount that he kept busy with other activities. To quit smoking was no mean feat, however Paul was determined to succeed, not only for himself, but for his whanau. Paul also shared how his whanau had a history of developing type two diabetes, and he was at risk of developing this, yet another motivational tool Paul utilised in his quest for change.

Paul decided it would be good to start off at Kensington Fitness. His Coordinator helped him to get involved in the gym. Paul started off with an initial appointment at the gym, where a fitness assessment was conducted and a programme set up. Paul started by going to the gym most days and really enjoyed it. He remarked straight away at his increased energy levels. No longer did Paul find it easier to lie on the couch - he was full of life with increased energy. However, this change has not been easy and Paul has said that one of the tough parts was “making sure I kept up with daily routines”. Therefore making physical activity a priority in his life was a decision Paul made.

Since making these changes, Paul has found he has experienced many health benefits and positive changes to his mental wellbeing. There have also been lifelong changes that Paul has made; he now drinks less alcohol and has kept off the cigarettes. Paul is also part of a rugby team which trains twice a week. On the other days Paul enjoys going to the gym and doing cardio and weights. He has also experienced better sleeping habits and he’s out and about a lot more. Paul enjoys the new lifestyle and is well on his way to being a great role model for his young nieces and nephews.
