Effective Targeting of Secondary Schools and Sports Gets Results
posted: 30 April 2012 Effective Targeting of Secondary Schools and Sports Gets Results
The new approach by Sport Northland of targeting resources into communities, clubs, schools and sports seems to be producing results according to a comparison of the secondary school census results for 2010 and 2011. The table below indicates the participation figures for the nine targeted secondary schools and 12 targeted and priority sports determined by Sport Northland. The results indicate the nine targeted schools all increased participation overall from 2010- 2011 by 9.9% however the increase in the target sports was 19.2% over the same nine schools.
Targeting schools means schools are supported to develop planning and programmes to increase participation levels. This is largely carried out the Regional Sports Director, Robyn Richards who supports the schools to take up the opportunities offered through the ASB Secondary Schools Events Programme.
Targeting the sport supports the sports organisation through their planning to develop strategies for growth in both capability and participation. This is usually reflected by increased clubs or competition numbers.
“With about one year to go in the initial period of the new approach these results are encouraging”, said Sport Senior Manager Grant Harrison, “It would appear we are on the right track and I look forward to the full dataset to be collected this May/June from community clubs and schools”.
