Nominate your volunteer now

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about sports volunteer recognition – specifically about the Queen’s Birthday honour that Sport Northland Chairman Richie Guy recently received.
And while it is not possible to give every sports volunteer a Queen’s Birthday honour (but there’s a thought though!), Sport NZ and Sport Northland are once again giving all Northland organisations who operate with sports volunteers the opportunity to recognise the fantastic work they do.
The 2012 Sport Volunteer Awards offer a simple way for Kiwis to recognise not just coaches, but all 20,000 volunteers at the heart of Northland community sport – referees, administrators, fundraisers, kit-washers, coaches – the lot!
We all know that sport is a huge part of Northland communities and plays an important role in many people’s lives. For those that don’t do much to say thanks (or even those that do!), the awards provide a great opportunity to say ‘thanks’ for all that our sport volunteers do to make sport happen.
There are also some great prizes to be won, including a $250 petrol voucher prize which is up for grabs for the school or club who gets in behind the awards the best. They need to show how they’re getting in behind the awards by promoting and getting nominations and they go in the draw.
Nominations are now open to any member of the public simply by going to www.sportnz.org.nz/volunteers or by visiting the ASB Northland Sports House.
With each nomination, a thank-you e-card is created which goes directly to the nominee. It will include a personal message from the person who nominated them.
Nominations close midnight, 28 August 2012, with three overall Northland winners being announced following that.
So often our hard working sports volunteers go unrecognised in this fast paced world – in any sports club we all know who they are, so don’t let this great opportunity go without putting in a nomination. Both you and the nominee could win some fantastic prizes – but at the very least, even by nominating them I’m sure you will be making their day and helping them stay involved in sport.
