Kauri Club Allocations update

Sport Northland’s Kauri Club allocated another 19 grants to talented Northland sports people last month.

The Kauri Club was first established in the year 2000 after the death of one of legends of Northland sport, Garry Frew. Garry’s family granted some money to Sport Northland with the express wishes that it be used to further junior sport in Northland.

Sport Northland was able to combine this with some seed funding from the 1980’s to create a fund, of which the interest is used to pass on to promising Northland sports people. Over $150,000 has now been granted, with many of the recipients going on to full New Zealand representation.

Among the latest list was a grant that was a little outside the norm for the Assessment Committee to make – that was to contribute $2000 towards the Northland Hockey Olympians as they prepare for the biggest event of their lives.

Normally, the Kauri Club asks all Northland Regional Sports Organisations to nominate three of their best sports people, and these individuals then apply to the club for funding to help them with specific costs to play their respective sports.

In the case of the hockey Olympians, it was considered a good opportunity to contribute to a fantastic cause and to one where every cent will count.

A total of 11 sports codes were successful in the latest round of funding. The grants go some way to helping each sports person achieve their goals for the year – travel is required to most national competitions and with so much international competition now within easy reach, the cost of playing sport at the top level is immense.

One of the criteria of receiving a grant is that the sports person commit to representing, or playing their sport out of, Northland for the next 12 months. This goes some way to helping to keep our talent in Northland in the face the obvious attractions that come with moving to the big metropolitan areas to further their sporting careers.

Two rounds of Kauri Club funding are held every year – the next round is set down for October, when Regional Sports Organisations will again be contacted by sport Northland to think about nominating three sports people as recipients.
