High-calibre leaders boost Sport Northland

Sport Northland held their AGM recently, ending another very successful year for Northland’s regional sports trust.
In a first for many years, no election was required for the two trustee positions that were up for grabs. The norm has been for at least four nominees (including those re-standing) for the two available positions (there are six elected trustees who have three year terms, meaning that two come up for re-election every year).
Richie Guy and Annie Mortimer were the current trustees whose term was up, and both have put their hat back in the ring for another three years.
Richie was the first Chairman of Sport Northland back in 1991, and but for a two year period when he was Chairman of the NZ Rugby Union, he has been a Board member of the Trust ever since. He was elected Chairman again in 2000 and has held that position to this day.
Sport Northland is very lucky indeed to have had someone of Richie’s skill and experience in leading the governance side of the organisation. He is one of the best and most experienced sports chairman in the country, and his presence has been one of the big reasons why the Sport Northland Board has attracted such a high calibre of people to stand for it.
Richie is a farmer from Waipu, who also has extensive business interests including many corporate directorships.
From a personal viewpoint, it has been, and thankfully continues to be, a privilege to work closely with Richie, who has a certain way of imparting the knowledge he has without even realising it.
Annie was first elected at the 2008 AGM, and has been a breath of fresh air to have around the board table. She is a qualified physiotherapist, and is also experienced in business, being a previous owner of Whangarei Physiotherapy Services. She has been heavily involved in the board policy area, leading the review of all board policies in 2009.
Good performance is led from the top in any organisation, and with a Chairman and Trustees of such high quality (the Board itself is highly rated by SPARC), Sport Northland is well placed to continue this performance into the future.
