NEW ZEALAND INDOOR BOWLS MIXED FOURS NATIONAL FINAL

(Napier)

15.7.2010

Taranaki’s Grant l’Ami, Mike Phipps, Michelle Watt and Lorraine Phipps from the Stratford Club head a very strong field in the 46th National Final of the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Mixed Fours that will be held at the Napier Indoor Bowls Association Hall, Napier on Saturday 24 July commencing at 10.15am.

l’Ami has one mixed fours title from 2001 while Mike and Lorraine Phipps were in the winning combination in 2006 and 2007. Mike Phipps holds four national championship titles and l’Ami has a national championship gold star. Watt is a young player who has competed well at national championships.

They will have strong opposition from the Upper Hutt Valley team of Trevor Gould Robert Fuge, Lisa Gould and Rachael Hoult, Orongamai Club.  Lisa Gould has won the mixed fours title three times in 1996, 2000 and 2003 while Hoult her daughter is a young player with great potential. Trevor Gould is a New Zealand representative and is a very experienced skip who will be well supported by Robert Fuge.

Nelson will be led by one of the most experienced and successful fours skips in the country in Nigel Warnes from the Tapawera Club who along with his son Hayden have both won four national championship titles. Nigel has a mixed fours title from 1992. They will combine with Denise Powick and Louise Mason.

Southland is another very strong contender in what promises to be an exciting competition. Gary Low along with his father and mother Graham and Jan were third equal in the national championship triples this year and combine with Jennifer Beattie from Grasmere Club. All of the Low family has gone close to national titles with runner-up and third equals to their credit.  However Graham won the Robertson Trophy for the player of the tournament in 2005. Gary Low won the Cliff Thompson Trophy for the best junior at the nationals in 1994

Ashburton will be represented by a Willowby Club team and will be skipped by New Zealand representative Sandra Keith who along with Graeme and Maxine Chapman won the mixed fours in 1990. This time they combine with Alex Crawford. Keith won a national title in the triples in 2006 and has been a national representative since 1997. Maxine Chapman is a former New Zealand representative while Graeme Chapman was in the runner-up team in the national championship triples this year.

The relative outsiders in the field are Auckland’s Don Fremlin, John Kidd, Glenys Kidd and Judy Cooke, Hobsonville Club, Bay of Plenty’s David Welch, Richard Manks, Annette Welch and Betty Lineker-Thompson, Rotorua Citizen’s Club and Wairarapa’s Donald Leighton, Sarndra Bain, Janice Leighton and Peter Bain.

However they have all come through strong district and zone competitions and they are all capable of causing major upsets.

Play is on a round robin basis and to reach the final players have already won

their district and one of eight regional zone competitions. Play is in three sessions commencing at 10.15am and 1.30pm and 7pm

The eight teams competing are:

Auckland (Don Fremlin, John Kidd, Glenys Kidd, Judy Cooke)

Bay of Plenty (David Welch, Richard Manks, Annette Welch, Betty Lineker-Thompson)

Taranaki (Grant l’Ami, Mike Phipps, Michelle Watt, Lorraine Phipps)

Wairarapa (Donald Leighton, Sarndra Bain, Janice Leighton, Peter Bain)
